On Tuesday 2nd April a party of volunteers from Flitwick P3 and Pete Hughes from Harlington P3 met at the sleeper bridge on Footpath 18.

(FP18 runs from Sundon Road to and across the field behind New Grounds.)

The aim was to replace the rotting old bridge.

Robin Richardson (CBC RofW Officer) had arranged for new sleepers to be delivered to site. (Thanks to local farmer Mark Davies for transporting them.)

The sleepers forming the surface of the bridge were fairly rotten and were prised out in pieces.

The old bridge bearers were then dug out, this proved a challenge as they had been secured with 1m long spikes.

As the new bridge was to be 4 sleepers wide, up from 3, the bearer pits were extended to take the new wider bearers, which were fitted and levelled.

It was then all hands on deck to carry the 2.5m long sleepers into position to form the new bridge.

A few bangs and taps to get everything lined up and level and we were nearly there.

The sleepers were secured down and to each other, the gaps filled in with earth and tamped down and the new bridge was complete.

Thanks to the team from Flitwick, Ian, Barry, Mike, Kath, Colin and Jonathan.
